Susan’s childhood love of dolls as playthings evolved into an adult love of collecting. As a collector, however, the dolls that called to Susan were not those of her childhood, but rather those of her grandmother’s day…dolls from the 1860s to about 1915. French bebes and German character dolls are particular favorites.

She has presented doll collecting programs for a variety of organizations including University Women, Newcomers, Presbyterian Women, and doll collector clubs.
Susan has written many articles and presented several programs about automatons, including a presentation to several hundred participants at the United Federation of Doll Clubs 1990 Regional Conference in Ontario, California.
In 2011 she published her research on the little known, and previously undocumented, California Bisque Doll Company.
Susan learned the techniques of porcelain dollmaking…from the casting of the porcelain to the painting of the features and the creating of the costumes, in order to better understand how antique bisque dolls were made.

In 1995 one of her creations…15 inch “Alice” depicting Vivian Tobin, the first Alice in Wonderland to star on the American stage in 1915…received Best of Show honors at the Mid-State Fair.
Susan’s dolls have found happy homes in many countries, from Japan to France, and many states, from California to New Jersey.
Susan has an appreciation for all types of dolls and loves to share her knowledge with visitors to her store, Once Upon a Tyme in Cambria.
